The Love Island Round-Up: Sharks and Praying Mantis' (27th January -2nd February)
Everyone online right now is talking about (Love Island specific of course – we do admit that there are actually more important things going on in the world…) is the impending doom of Casa Amour on Monday night. Well, impending doom for the Islanders, but really excellent television for the rest of us stuck in a post-Brexit-England. But in a bid to urge you to not forget the drama from the week just gone, here is our round up of all the gossip from the last week of Love Island.
‘Big Mike’, like his new nickname would suggest, has dominated the villa this week. Monday night’s episode saw Leanne confess to Mike that she really wasn’t feeling a ‘vibe’ between them and she would prefer to end it. A shocking twist then saw a re-coupling take place the next day, with Mike choosing to save Sophie instead of Leanne – woah! Leanne was distraught with Mike, exclaiming “I can’t believe he just did that” after it was clear that she would be next to leave the villa. Why would he would choose her though?
Mike appeared to be infatuated with Leanne right from the offset and spent the last three weeks following her around the villa closely. But this infatuation has quickly changed to an obsession with Jess – what a shark. It really makes you question how pure his intentions were with Leanne. Is he just in it for the money the fame? But then aren’t they all? Either way, there’s a good joke online that ‘Mike moves quicker than the coronavirus’ and we couldn’t agree more.
At the beginning of the whole Mike fiasco, Jess came across as mature and intelligent, explaining to him that because he had shown such dedication and commitment to Leanne for all those weeks, anyone that he chose now would inevitably feel like second best. Oh, and that she was in a couple with Luke M and was going to keep going with him as that was the right thing to do. But somewhere in the week it all went wrong, Jess cracked quite quickly and her feelings were revealed in Sunday’s episode when she chose to ‘snog’ Mike in the ‘Snog, Marry, Pie Challenge’ instead of Luke. She claimed that it was kinder to marry Luke M, but Luke correctly called out for this explaining how he found it disrespectful and rude. Poor Biebs.
Rebecca and Wallace were also clearly having some issues this week. Or rather, Rebecca was having issues with Wallace after she told him she was interested, he saved her in the re-coupling, and then immediately after she appeared to basically ignore him. The lonely Scot was clutching at straws the other morning when he made Rebecca breakfast. A logical assumption would be that Rebecca is a basic bitch that enjoys avocado toast – who doesn’t? But instead, Rebecca appeared to be utterly repulsed by the sight of the avocado toast and couldn’t even muster the energy to say a polite thank you. The poor boy. And to make things worse, Sunday’s episode then saw both Wallace and Sophie get kicked out of the villa after the Islanders had to vote for the least compatible couples which left them vulnerable – leaving Rebecca safe to continue her sweep through every single boy in the villa like a giant praying mantis.
Shaughna keeps proving herself as the wisest Islander, but her comments keep getting her in trouble as the rest of the Islanders just can’t seem to hack the truth. After Connor left the villa last week Sophie stayed and didn’t leave with him as most people expected her to. Then when the next re-coupling came about, Sophie and Leanne had a conversation with Nas trying to suss out whether he would choose them instead of Demi. They told him how much they wanted to stay in the villa and asked him whether he was sure of his feelings for Demi – probing, loaded questions. After Mike did the shocking deed and picked Sophie over Leanne, Shaughna spoke to Sophie and just honestly said she would have felt bad for Demi if Nas picked Sophie over her. As Demi’s time in the villa would have been so short. Plus, Sophie claimed that she would struggle to get on with anyone as well as Connor and so her time left in the Love Island villa would have seen her most likely remain in a friendship couple. Shaughna has since apologised for her delivery and her timing, but in essence what she said was surely valid. It is also worth remembering that a few weeks ago Shaunghna said she thought that Mike was playing the biggest game out of everyone in the villa. What a wise owl you are Shaughna.
When statements such as “he was like a brother to me” are made after three days of knowing each other it does induce a strong eye-roll, but it must be remembered that friendships and relationships are likely to accelerate faster than in the ‘outside world’ as they are quite literally spending 24 hours a day with each other. In light of this, why is it so wrong to call out a friend for bad behaviour? Or rather, why is sharing your honest opinion so bad? Making friends and having deep, all-encompassing friendships is surely about honestly and truth, which Shaughna seems to understand by the bucketload but not many of the rest of them do. I wonder if Sophie will show the same loyalties to Connor now that she has also been booted out of the villa?
Surely, the best news from this week has to be that Nas was caught K-I-S-S-I-N-G new girl, Demi. Nas has not really had a chance at love since he’s been in the villa, but when Wallace and Demi entered mid-week it all turned around for him. Demi seems to be genuinely really interested in Nas, they are already getting along well, and we look forward to seeing how it blossoms over the next few weeks… unless, his head is turned by the new girls on Monday.
