International Women's Day 2020: the art edition
Women have long been under-represented in the art world. In 2020 with what appears to be the glass ceiling breaking, we are seeing more exhibitions by women. To mark international women’s day and to commemorate the #5WomenArtists campaign we are sharing some of the exhibitions by female artists you can see in London right now and a couple upcoming exhibitions.

#FLODown: Known as the lady in Pablo Picasso’s 1937 ‘Weeping Women’ painting; Door Maar was a talented French Photographer and painter. With a collection of works that was seen to be radical, political and innovative she was an inspiration to many – which, of course includes Picasso.
The Tate modern exhibition presents her early photographs, paintings and advertisements. This weekend is one of your last chances to see with the exhibition as it is ending on 15th March.

Kara Walker Exhibition: Fons Americanus

#FLODown: The Tate modern presents the works of Brooklyn-based artist Kara Walker. Commissioned by Hyundai, Walker has created a 42 ft. high fountain, Fons Americanus, inspired by the Victoria memorial outside of Buckingham Palace. Located in the Turbine Hall, the fountain depicts the Deep South’s history of slavery, in a reproduction of JMW Turner's 1840 painting Slave Ship. The artwork is designed to encourage us to confront a history that is often misremembered in the UK.

Nevin Aladag: Fanfare

#FLODown: HENI Project space presents the first solo exhibition of works by Nevin Aladağ; the exhibition brings together artwork that explores sound, rhythm and music. Including her video work Traces (2015), a musical portrait of the urban landscape in Stuttgart, Germany, and Session (2013) is a video featuring drums, bells and other percussive instruments from Pakistan, India and Iraq.

Emmanuelle Moureaux: Slice of Time

#FLODown: Emmanuel Moureaux presents her colourful immersive exhibition titled ‘Slice of Time’. This is the first time that Moureaux is displaying her large-scale installation of cut out coloured paper in the UK. The exhibition is colourful, immersive and gives you a chance to wander through layers of numbers in 100 shades of colours and white. These represent the past and future and encourages you to challenge your thoughts on our time here on earth.

#FLODown: The Tate Modern has announced a year-long Yayoi Kusama exhibition in celebration of two decades of the Tate Modern. Renowned for her incredibly unique vision and innovative style, the Tate presents a rare opportunity to experience two of Kusama’s famed Infinity Mirrored Rooms. The exhibition will also feature photographs on display for the first time, which will provide some context on the impactful influence of Kusama’s mirrored rooms. What a way for the Tate to celebrate 20 years, we can’t wait!
Some of Kusama’s most notable work include: Narcissus Garden (1966), Repetitive Vision (1996), Pumpkin (1994), The Obliteration Room(2002), Chandelier of Grief (2016).

Lynette Yiadom-Boakeye: Fly in the league With The Night

#FLODown: Tate presents 80 painting and works on paper by Lynette Yiadom Boakeye from 2003 to present day. Boakyes’s paintings of fictitious people have earned her the prestigious Carnegie Prize in 2018, and a shortlist for the Turner prize in 2013. Expect to find perplexing paintings with poetic titles, that’s demands you create your own interpretations. Boakeye explains to Tate ‘I write about the things I can’t paint and paint the things I can’t write about.’

Toyin Ojih Odutola: A Countervailing Theory

#FLODown: The Barbican Art Gallery (The Curve) present the works of Nigerian-American artist Toyin Ojih Odutola. Odutola will explore an imagined ancient myth, with an immersive soundscape by artist Peter Adjaye. Working with Pastel and charcoal, Odutola explores the idea that drawing can be a form of story telling, challenging the viewer to piece together the story. Odutola draws inspiration from ancient history, popular culture to contemporary politics.

Tracey Emin/Edvard Munch

The Royal Academy of Arts

#FLODown: World-renowned British contemporary artist Tracey Emin comes to the Royal Academy of Arts in November with her exhibition that will focus on the influence Edvard Munch has had her career. Having taken to Munch’s work at a young age, Emin was particularly drawn to his works on expressionism and his exploration of the complexity of the human psyche. The exhibition will display works from both artists.
