Black Lives Matter: anti-racist organisations to support in the UK

The recent death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in America has sparked global outrage.  Thousands of anti-racism protesters across the world are demanding justice for these individuals, and are highlighting the widespread racial injustices that occur daily. Racial issues are not just unique to the US, this is a global issue that we must all work together to solve.

Over the coming weeks we will sharing a huge range of resources to help you on your journey to education on this topic, and we have been sharing lots of information on our social media too. Take the time to educate yourself, listen, learn and support. Help create change.

Below is a list of UK-based anti-racism charities that you should support (if you are able). This list is not exhaustive, please email us if you have further suggestions.

Black Lives Matter UK

Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. The Black Lives Matter Foundation is a global organisation that has bases in the US, UK, and Canada. Their mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities.

Formed in 2016 Black Lives Matter UK (BLMUK) is a coalition of black activists and organisers across the UK. They are committed to dismantling imperialism, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and the state structures that disproportionately harm black people in Britain and around the world. You can support BLMUK by donating via their GoFundMe Page.


Black Minds Matter

Black Minds Matter is crowdfunding to offer free therapy sessions for black individuals and families in the UK with certified, professional, black practitioners. Racism is a form of abuse and can cause significant harm to a persons’ mental wellbeing. Donate to their GoFund Me Page Now.


Show Racism the Red Card

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity. They provide educational workshops, training sessions, multimedia packages, and a whole host of other resources, all to tackle racism in society. 


Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was set up as a result of the murder of 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence in 1993. The trust works with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, aged 13 to 30, inspiring and enabling them to succeed in the career of their choice. 

 

Stand Up To Racism

Stand Up to Racism campaigns against racism, fascism, Islamophobia and anti-semitism. They work to eradicate the racist rhetoric sweeping across Europe through their series of anti-racist initiatives. You can make a one-off donation or sign up to become a member and make regular donations.


Stop Hate UK

Stop Hate UK works alongside strategic, local partnerships to tackle hate crimes and discrimination, supporting the individuals and communities that this affects. In light of the coronavirus outbreak, they need donations now more than ever to help them continue to tackle widespread hate and discrimination.  


Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI)

SARI is a charity which provides support and advice to victims of hate crimes. Alongside this, they engage with business and schools to provide important anti-hate awareness training. 

 

Southall Black Sisters

Southhall Black Sisters work to highlight and challenge all forms of gender-related violence against women. They primarily work with black women, helping to empower them to gain more control over their lives.

Memorial Fund for Belly Mujinga

Belly Mujinga worked on the concourse at London’s Victoria station and died after a man who claimed to have COVID-19 spat and coughed at her and a colleague. A GoFundMe page was set up to fund her funeral. Donations will also be used to support the family, particularly her little girl. 

 

The Exist Loudly Fund

The Exist Loudly Fund has been set up to support queer black young people in London and across the country. The fundraiser will fund workshops and mentorships to provide a space for young people to explore their identities in a safe and welcoming space.
