Yinka Ilori transforms Piccadilly Circus with mythical art installation
British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori unveils bold Pegasus sculptures at Piccadilly Circus, celebrating imagination and creativity.
Art of London has commissioned artist and designer Yinka Ilori MBE to transform Piccadilly Circus with a vibrant installation titled Good Things Come To Those Who Wait from 20 – 31 August 2024.
Multi-disciplinary artist and designer, Yinka Ilori MBE, has infused Piccadilly Circus with vibrant creativity this summer through his installation, Good Things Come to Those Who Wait. Unveiled by Art of London, the artwork introduces two striking winged horses inspired by Greek mythology, positioned on colourful plinths around the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. This marks the first addition of new sculptures to this historic West End location in 132 years. Known for his bold and joyful style, Ilori’s work transforms the fountain into a powerful symbol of imagination and possibility, inviting visitors to embrace their potential to achieve the impossible.

On display from 20 - 31 August 2024, the 23-foot-tall Pegasus figures seem to soar as they gallop on gracefully curved plinths, each featuring uplifting messages. This temporary installation reinterprets the historic Anteros statue, drawing on the legendary tale of Pegasus.

The collaboration between Art of London, Yinka Ilori, and public art agency New Public underscores a broader initiative to make art accessible to all. With free colouring sheets for children and insights from Young Ambassadors of the Greater London Authority's youth programme, the installation fosters creativity and community engagement. As part of a larger series of public-realm initiatives, including the upcoming Inside Out Festival and Art After Dark in October, Ilori's installation marks the beginning of a cultural renaissance in the West End, celebrating the transformative power of art in public spaces.
