The best new and returning TV shows to watch in 2023

2023 brings a host of exciting new and returning TV shows to look out for. Keep an eye out for newcomers like Copenhagen Cowboys and the highly-anticipated prequel to Bridgerton, focusing on Queen Charlotte. Fans of hit shows like Happy Valley, Succession and the final season of Top Boy will also be delighted to see their return. You (2018- )

#FLODown: Penn Badgley returns as notorious serial killer Joe Goldberg to wreak more havoc in season four of the Netflix favourite. This time the season will be set in London! Copenhagen Cowboy (2023- )

#FLODown: Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is back for his second television show set in his native Denmark. Similar to his first series, Too Old to Die Young, this six-part thriller is full of Refn’s signature neon visuals, static shots, blood and crime. Set in Copenhagen’s criminal underbelly, the series will follow Miu, a woman with “mysterious supernatural abilities” on a revenge mission. 

White Lotus (2021- )

The Mike White-created show which recently aired its second season setting in beautiful Sicily, is an abundance of sex, lies, drama, murder and dark comedy. Set in picturesque sun-filled White Lotus resorts offering beach, yachts, and scenic views it’s the perfect setting for an abundance of drama and murder to unfold. Audience members spend the season in a game of whodunit as we discover the ins and outs of each character and the baggage they carry. #FLODown: Gary Oldman returns as sarcastic MI6 agent Jason Lamb. The series follows a group of agents who have been exiled to the MI5 dumping ground Slough House for various wrongdoings. Wrongdoings which include gambling, alcoholism, violence and bringing Stansted Airport to a standstill after messing up a training exercise. However, these misfits prove to be far more resourceful than people imagine. The TV adaptation of Mick Herron’s Slough House books provides a good representation of the much-loved books. Happy Valley (2014- )

#FLODown: With Line of Duty finished, you'll be happy to fill that void with another great British crime drama, as Sarah Lancashire reprise her role as Sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley. The show has returned to our screens for its third and final series, a whole six years since the drama was last on our screens.  The Bafta-award-winning show is set in the Calder Valley and follows Sergeant Catherine Cawood as she pursues the man who assaulted her late daughter and leads a team of police officers in Calderdale to solve cases in the area. This West-Yorkshire based show is a gripping thriller that has been a huge hit for the BBC. Seasons 1 -2 are available to stream on iPlayer now. Season 3 is now showing on BBC, Sunday, at 9 pm.

 

Riches (2022- )

#FLODown: The six-part series, which has been compared to the hit series like Footballers’ wives, Empire and Succession, dives into the luxurious lives of rich people and uncovers the sibling rivalry and controversies that lie beneath the surface. The glamorous series focuses on the super-successful, and wealthy Richards family as the members fight for control over the business empire, a Black beauty brand, in the wake of their father's death. Season 1 is available to stream now, and features a great cast of British talent. Each episode of this family drama will have you hooked.

 

Outerbanks (2020-)

#FLODown: The Pogues are back. the series follows a group of teens as they try to locate the lost Cross of Santo Domingo. Set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, season 2 ended with them escaping to a deserted island having failed to locate the lost treasure. John B and his crew of friends will be back for more action and more adventure as Netflix has announced the third season will hit the streaming service on 23 February. If your like us and miss the glory days of One Tree Hill and The OC, this show is very reminiscent of those classic American dramas.

Industry (2020- )

#FLODown: This slick tv show follows the chaotic life of a group of seriously horny young FX traders at Pierrepoint & Co as they handle huge amounts of money and dabble in huge amounts of drugs. Industry exposes the bleak world of working in the financial industry in London while being in your early 20s trying to find your footing in life. The financial-workplace drama feels like the older sibling of the former E4 coming-of-age series ‘Skin’. Similar to Skins, lead by a great ensemble cast, every episode is thrilling and addresses the complexities relating to sexuality, exploitation in the workplace, social hierarchies, power structures and gender relations. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (2018- )

Release date: Season 4 release has yet to be confirmed, reports are it will be this year. 

#FLODown: John Krasinski stars as CIA analyst Dr Jack Ryan as he leaves the safety and comfort of his office job to go on an international chase tackling terrorism and global threats to the U.S. The series is based on the books by American novelist Tom Clancy, who’s best known for spy and military fiction set during and after the Cold War. He has produced about 32 novels featuring Jack Ryan and his friends, in what the author has named, the Ryanverse. Krasinski is the fifth actor to have portrayed the iconic spy, and the first to do so on the small screen. Jack Ryan has been confirmed for a fourth and last season, the details of which are yet to be announced. Reports are it will be towards the end of 2023. In the meantime, watch Jack Ryan fight crime in seasons 1-3 on Amazon now. 

 

Succession (2018- )

#FLODown: Squid games became the most-watched series on Netflix in 2021. The strangely addictive show revolves around a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children's games for the chance to win the equivalent of £29 million. Lucky for us, Gi-hun, the hero from season one, will return to our screens for a second season. Netflix has yet to confirm the exact release date, many suspect it will be towards the end of 2023. Top Boy (2011- )

Release date: Season 5 has been scheduled for release in 2023. The exact release date is to be confirmed.

#FLODown: Twelve years after its first debut on channel 4, Top Boy returned to Netflix thanks to rapper Drake in 2019. Season 3 is set in 2019, taking place eight years after the event of the first season and six years after the events of the second season. The series is set on the Summerhouse estate in the London Borough of Hackney and focuses on the lives of two drug dealers Dushane and Sully as they try to regain their former Top Boy position. The show sheds a light on the realities of UK gang culture, drug dealing and the divide between rich and poor. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023- )

#FLODown: The much-anticipated prequel to Shonda Rhimes' Bridgerton will arrive this May. The limited series is based on Queen Charlotte's rise to prominence and power, including her marriage to King George. This will undoubtedly fill the void until the release of season 3 of Brigderton.

Dreamland (2023- )

#FLODown: Dreamland is based on Sharon Horgan’s BAFTA-winning short, exploring lies, loves and aspirations within a family of four sisters based in the British seaside town of Margate. Starring Freema Agyeman and Lily Allen, it is a dark comedic exploration of multi-generational female relationships, and their dysfunctional family dynamics. The exact release date has yet to be confirmed.
