Sculpture in the City returns for 2024 with seventeen artworks
The annual public art exhibition, Sculptures in the City, returns for its 13th edition with a collection of exciting new sculptures.
Sculpture in the City, has announced the 17 artworks for its 13th edition, featuring ten new sculptures by artists such as Samuel Ross, Richard Mackness, Ida Ekblad, Julian Opie, Hilary Jack, Daniel Silver, Seph Li, Maya Rose Edwards, and Clare Burnett. Launching on 24 July 2024, the exhibition will transform the City’s public spaces into a vibrant open-air gallery, with interactive and contemplative pieces that engage viewers and prompt reflection on contemporary issues like the climate crisis.
Highlights include Maya Rose Edwards' Kissing Gate in Aldgate Square, which brings a rural feature into the urban landscape to encourage romantic encounters, and Hilary Jack’s Deluge at The Leadenhall Building, using LED text strips to juxtapose contemporary flood data with ancient myths. Richard Mackness' Temple, a gilded paper bag sculpture, and Clare Burnett’s Secret Sentinels at 70 St Mary Axe, exploring privacy and surveillance, are among the standout pieces. Additionally, Daniel Silver’s Rock Formations at 40 Leadenhall, Ida Ekblad's BOOK OF BOREDOM on Undershaft, and Julian Opie’s upcoming portraits at 100 Bishopsgate add to the exhibition’s variety.
In addition to the artworks, Sculpture in the City offers a free activation programme from summer to March 2025, including workshops, tours, talks, and student takeovers, supported by EC BID and curated by Lacuna. The exhibition also features permanent installations like Oliver Bragg's In Loving Memory and Elisa Artesero’s The Garden of Floating Words. Visitors can explore the artworks via the Bloomberg Connects app and enjoy site-specific music and sound art through MSCTY x Sculpture in the City.
The exhibition will be part of London Sculpture Week from 21-29 September 2024, in collaboration with Frieze Sculpture, The Line, and the Mayor of London’s Fourth Plinth Programme.
