Sadler's Wells' annual festival of hip hop dance theatre will celebrate its 20th year this April
Sadler's Wells will be celebrating the 20th year of its annual festival of hip hop dance theatre, Breakin’ Convention 2023, from Friday 28 April to Sunday 30 April 2023.

The Breakin' Convention Festival is a celebration of hip hop culture, featuring live DJs, bespoke graffiti, freestyle sessions and a total makeover of the foyer. This year's festival takes place at Sadler's Wells Theatre from Friday 28 April to Sunday 30 April 2023, before embarking on a UK tour from Wednesday 17 May to Wednesday 14 June.For the first time, the festival will be preceded by events across London presented by Breakin' Convention, including Word Becomes Flesh at The Yard on Saturday 11 March, Soweto Skeleton Movers – Unbreakable at The Place on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 April, and Open Art Surgery at Bernie Grant Arts Centre on Saturday 15 April.
The line-up for Sadler's Wells' 20th anniversary celebration of the Breakin' Convention Festival just got better, with the addition of some world-renowned talent. Joining the festival this year will be Les Twins, the international dance sensation from France, along with original crew members Ruben "Rubix" Noel and Laura Nala from Criminalz. These incredible performers have toured with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg. They first graced the Breakin' Convention stage in 2015 and went on to win the million-dollar prize on NBC's World of Dance.
Also on the bill is South Korean crew MOVER, who will present their high-energy, signature power moves in Merry Go Round, which premiered in South Korea in October 2022. The six dancers, aged between 21 and 38, include b-girl Steel8, and b-boys Rocket, Tazo, Mario, Sknuf and Pocket, who competed in the 2019 WDSF World Breaking Championship in China.Max Revell, winner of BBC Young Dancer 2019, will showcase his mesmerising moves in Floatin' Suitcase and Backwards Man, as seen on the popular dance show.
Other exciting performers include South London-based Krump collective Gully South Block, BBC Young Dancer 2022 contestant Lauren Scott, locking specialists Ghetto Funk Collective, Brazilian b-boy Samuka from Ill-Abilities, French dance collective La Diva aux Pieds Nus, and UK dance companies Far From The Norm and Boy Blue, along with Dutch threading artist Justin de Jager.
