“I want you by my side
So that I never feel alone again”
Milky Chance is the name of German folk duo from Kassel, but their sound could also be described as alternative rock, electronic, reggae, folk and indie – what a mix. On Wednesday night Milky Chance took over Brixton Academy as part of their ‘Mind the Moon’ tour with their album of the same name. The stage was dressed on a juxtaposition, the backdrop was half modern lights in a box shape which came up to head height, with the higher portion of the stage draped with a wild west type sky and a huge full moon.
The duo started out with a few tracks from their newest album including ‘Fallen’, ‘Right From Here’ and ‘Fado’. The latter being the most energetic and catchy of them all. Lead singer, Clemens Rehbein, has a whiney but deep tone to his voice which brings a sense of wisdom to otherwise pop-heavy tracks.
Songs from their first album really got the crowd going, from the catchy melodic beat to the repetitive lyrics reverberating around Brixton’s well-loved O2 venue. Fan favourites, ‘Down By The River’, ‘Loveland’, and ‘Flashed Junk Mind’ stole the show. ‘Stolen Dance’ was their last track, until the band came rushing back on stage for their encore – rather keenly we may add. Whilst the crowd was quite young, and considering we were in Brixton, extremely white, it was an enjoyable and upbeat evening. Milky Chance are a tight and talented duo, and we are looking forward to what comes next from them.
Support came from Alexander Kotz, also known as Elderbrook. Although at first glance it appeared a bit awkward with him up there as a one man band on quite a large stage, his energy was perceptible and did really get the evening off to a good start.
Tracks from Elderbrook that are well worth a listen are ‘Cola’, ‘Something About You (featuring Rudimental)’ and ‘Woman’. His music has got a good pre-drinks vibe.
