The Ruggeds - State Shift: a dynamic exploration of breaking in theatre.

Following the highly impressive Breakin' Convention hip-hop dance festival in April, anticipation was running high for the performance by the renowned Dutch breaking collective, The Ruggeds. With a remarkable 15-year journey as a collective and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of breaking in theatre, The Ruggeds set the bar high. Their first World Title win in 2014 at the UK B-boy Championships, alongside their previous performances at Breakin' Convention, established their reputation. Having triumphed in over 200 breaking competitions, The Ruggeds have now ventured into the realm of theatre, captivating audiences around the world with their ground-breaking work.
In their latest production, State Shift at Sadler’s Wells, The Ruggeds treated the audience to an intimate evening featuring two choreographed pieces by Roy Overdijk, the duet Waterbrothers and solo Turns. Accompanied by an energetic musical showcase from Jessy 'Boi Beige' Kemper, who created a club-like ambience in-between performances that, complemented the dancers' artistry. The evening also included two short but compelling films that beautifully captured the friendship between choreographer Roy Overdijk and the youngest member, Lee Demierre in the Waterbrothers, and also explored the deep context for Virgil 'Skychief' Dey Turns.

In Waterbrothers, staged under a cluster of neon tube lights, Roy Overdijk and Lee Demierre displayed an impeccable synchronicity of movements. Their graceful performance evoked the tranquillity and fluidity of water while introducing subtleties of competition and mentorship. Demierre's bursts of energy through dynamic b-boying manoeuvres added another dimension to the duet. The performance concluded with a poignant moment of solace, as Demierre found comfort in Overdijk's reassuring gesture, in what felt like the display of an enduring bond. This bond later explored in the short film shown to the audience.

In the solo piece Turns, the remarkable Virgil 'Skychief' Dey took centre stage, delving into the pivotal moments that shaped his life's trajectory. With breathtaking athleticism, Dey portrayed the resilience and determination to overcome setbacks. His movements, popping and breaking, masterfully conveyed newfound confidence, leading up to astonishing displays of agility, speed, and strength. The grand finale showcased mind-blowing arm bending leaving the audience awestruck by his physical abilities and what felt like a highly emotional journey.
The show concluded with two short films that beautifully expanded upon the essence of Waterbrothers and Turns. These visually stunning films transported the audience, showcasing the dancers' performances in water, on ice, and on sand. They skilfully deepened the meaning of the live performances.
The Ruggeds' performance in State Shift not only met the high expectations set by their impressive track record but also exceeded them. With their inspiring choreography, mesmerising visuals, and the seamless integration of live music, The Ruggeds delivered an evening of dynamic and thought-provoking artistry. Their ability to combine technical brilliance with emotional depth was a testament to their ability to deliver on pushing the boundaries of breaking in theatre.
