Premiered in 1982, Nelken is a profound exploration of tragic and cruel scenes juxtaposed with moments of tenderness and beauty. The set will be transformed with a carpet of 8000 silk carnations, creating a visually stunning and symbolic backdrop.

The heart of the performance lies in the "Nelken line," a walking dance motif that eloquently illustrates the four seasons. Performed by a new generation of Tanztheater Wuppertal dancers, the piece showcases the relentless energy of the ensemble as they engage in various activities on stage, interacting with the carnations in a myriad of ways. The production is accompanied by music from the 1930s and 1940s, including tracks by George Gershwin, Franz Lehár, Louis Armstrong, Sophie Tucker, Quincy Jones, and Richard Tauber.

Nelken represents a nearly 30-year collaboration between Pina Bausch and set designer Peter Pabst, who aimed to create an otherworldly space by covering the stage with carnations. Pina Bausch's influence revolutionised dance, combining it with theatre to create the Tanztheater Wuppertal. The production has a longstanding history with Sadler’s Wells, with the theatre presenting Bausch’s work multiple times over the years. This revival, under the direction of Boris Charmatz, promises to be a beautiful challenge and an idyllic way to spend Valentine’s Day this year.
