Free cosmic art experience to transform London’s West End during Art After Dark
Art of London’s Art After Dark is set to light up London’s West End from 6th to 8th March 2025, bringing a free, immersive cosmic art experience by award-winning eco-feminist artist and experience designer, Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian. The event, part of the city’s late-night programme, will feature surrealist public art, space science, and cutting-edge interstellar technology. The programme will showcase massive asteroid-sized inflatable moon rocks in Piccadilly Circus, towering UV-reactive sculptures inspired by Schrödinger’s quantum paradox, and a public soundscape, with recordings from the West End, including heartbeats, travelling to the moon and back.
The public will have the opportunity to stargaze and search for extraterrestrial intelligence with professional astronomers using advanced telescopes. Thanks to collaboration with the SETI Institute and the University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank Observatory, visitors will experience breathtaking views of distant galaxies, nebulae, and planets like Jupiter. The event will also feature a unique Earth-Moon-Earth communication, broadcasting audio signals received from the moon, creating a cosmic soundscape in the heart of the West End.
Timed to coincide with International Women’s Day, this ambitious art programme will highlight contributions from female and non-binary musicians and innovators in both art and astronomy. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian’s vision of inclusivity, sustainability, and cosmic aesthetics aims to engage audiences with a celebration of creativity, scientific progress, and the shared future of Earth and space. In addition to the public art installations, visitors can explore space-themed ceramic works and an animated short film by Ben Hayoun-Stépanian, screened on the iconic Piccadilly Lights.
